Runes

Runes are special items that can be inserted in the Socketed Equipment to get extra stats. Unlike Jewels, runes provide bonus based on the item slot they are inserted.
Runes can be upgraded in the Crafting menu to get higher # rune. Usually it requires 3 runes of the same type and starting from rune 
Aro #10 it will also require a material.
Other than Socketing runes can also being used in the Socket menu tohether with an item to create a Runeword items. It applies powerful bonuses to the items and require specific runes. You can find known recipes at Runeword Recipes page.
